JDM evaporator core

Postby Dirk » Thu Jul 30, 2009 4:42 pm

Does anyone know if the JDM evaporator core is the same as the USDM/Canadian core? (Mine's sprung a leak. :( )

I can't tell you off hand, but try looking up the part numbers on http://www.toyodiy.com

Interesting. toyodiy shows the part number 88501-17040(50/51) and lists the part for $539.40. I have the core in-hand, and it appears that the in/outlets are simply swapped side to side. If a US part (88501-17030) were to be used, the in/outlets would be shifted about 1/2" forward vs the JDM part. My mechanic assures me that there is sufficient play in the hoses that attach to the various tubing that I can use the USDM part - which I've found for sale in the US ranging in price from $81.75US to $99.99US. I'm going to call my local Toyota dealer and see if they have both part numbers, and also if either cross-reference to any other Toyota models. I'll post back here when I know more.

Thanks for the tip, immorality!

Well, I couldn't source an evaporator core in Canada, but found one in the US at Tech Choice Parts. Cost was $66.18 plus $31.25 USPS shipping (about $105CDN total).

Not to be a dick and I know I am probebly opening a can of worms But I really don't care.

About a year or so ago, you put R12a in your system and I warned you about that. I told you not to use it.
I also told you if you must, to evacuate the system and said you must replace the reciever/dryer. You argued with me and did not do as we advised. And now look what happened.
The acid mix you made by not doing it right, has come to bite you.
Receiver/dryer MUST be replaced. But your "AC specialist" didn't seem to think so :bash:
Both Camshaft and I warned you about this. I see way too many of these here at the dealership.
JDM and USDM evaporators are not the same.
Good luck...

Why would you want to be a dick about this, Matt? The leaking evap core has nothing to do with the R12A. The (very slow) leak was apparently there before that was done. No other problems have been discovered in the system.

 No ofcourse not! The leaking evap core has nothing to do with mixing R12 and R12a. Just like when you compressor starts leaking, it will also have nothing to do with the R12a.
I don't even know why I bother...Sorry!
I am done.

For a savings of more than $400, it's worth trying. :)

It's been above 35 here for the last week; with a black on black hardtop, the windows rolled down, and the fan on full blast, it's still getting to 40+ in the cabin... and well above that 'round town.

The evaporator core I got from Tech Choice Parts (part number 88501-17030; cost was $66.18 plus $31.25 USPS shipping) is nearly exactly the same as the JDM part (88501-17040). The only discernible difference is that the US part is about 1/4" less tall (easily shimmed up). The in/outlet offset I was concerned about is a non-issue (offsets are exactly the same on the same side).
